About DuneScape

Grounded in ecology

DuneScape was created by Ecologist Amy Bazeley, to address the burgeoning need to restore biodiversity in our threatened dune ecosystems and rebuild their essential land buffering role in the face of climate change. Amy has 25 years of experience in conservation and restoration. Her original company AB Ecology Ltd was founded in 2002 and was the well-established precursor to DuneScape.

Passionate about plants

DuneScape is a Northland-based business with a vision to grow native sand-binding plants (Spinifex and Pīngao) at scale. These plants are highly evolved to tolerate the exposed dune environment and are unique in their ability to build and stabilise coastal sand. All seed is sourced, propagated and planted by Ecological District (ecosourced) to protect and optimise natural genetic stock and maximise plant resilience.

Co-founder and nursery manager Shaun (Chook) Johnson, is an ex-chef and dedicated landscape gardener. Chook is a 3rd- generation local who is passionate about growing plants to protect and nurture our beaches and coastline.

Restore the buffer and the biodiversity

With the effects of climate change highlighting the fragile nature of our environment, we are passionate about restoring our dune systems and reinstating the natural buffer between the ocean and the land. DuneScape offers dune restoration planting plans, dune plant supply and action on the ground with project management and implementation all under one roof.
